Exclusive Interview with
Natasha Hughes Smith
When did you start writing?
I've loved storytelling and writing since childhood. I started writing Reflections in 2008 after I had a vivid dream, but I stopped soon after starting. It sat for 12 years until March 2020; then I completed it and published the novel in November 2020.
What makes writing your passion?
I absolutely love storytelling.
How long have you been writing?
What was the feeling when you published your first book?
I was so proud and felt a great sense of accomplishment. However, I was more emotional when I typed the last word of the novel.
What’s the story behind your choice of characters?
My characters represent the feelings of people who feel unaccomplished or disappointed about some aspect of their lives.
What annoys you the most in pursuing a writing career?
Sometimes readers forget that the most famous and accomplished writers were new; they started just like all writers, writing their first book and hoping someone will enjoy it.
How do you get over the “writer’s block”?
I take a break and step away.
We all know the writer’s path is never easy, what makes you keep going? What advice would you give to new authors?
Just know that you have something of value and it's worth the effort!
If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would you say?
You are beautiful, gifted, capable and deserving of your greatest desires.
Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with the bad ones?
I read them all and I have to remind myself that my work is not for everyone; no project will ever be loved by everyone.
What is the feeling when you get a good review?
It energizes me to write more.
Have you ever incorporated something that happened to you in real life into your novels?
There's a little part of me in a lot of my characters.
Which of your characters you can compare yourself with? Did you base that character on you?
No, none of the characters share my life experiences.
What do you think, the book cover is as important as the story?
The book cover is a very tricky thing to create. But just like in life never judge a book by its cover.
Do you connect with your readers? Do you mind having a chat with them or you prefer to express yourself through your writing?
I love to discuss my novels with my readers because I love my stories just as much if not more than my readers.
How do you feel when people appreciate your work or recognize you in public?
I'm honored to meet them and discuss my work.
Who is your favorite author? Why?
I have read the works of so many diverse authors and I loved them all. I couldn't even attempt to label a favorite.
What’s the dream? Whom would you like to be as big as?
I don't want to compare my success to anyone. I want to be a trailblazer and my own unique person.
Would you rewrite any of your books? Why?
No, I think what I've created is what it should be. There's no reason to look back; my creative efforts should focus on the next story or project.
If you could switch places with any author – who would that be?
I would only want to switch bank accounts.
What would you say to the “trolls” on the internet? We all know them – people who like to write awful reviews to books they’ve never read or didn’t like that much, just to annoy the author.
I hate that! But I have to focus on the positive reviews and trust that I have created great work!
What would you say to your readers?
Thank you for your support! Also, help a girl out and tell everyone how great my novels are!
Share a bit about yourself – where do you live, are you married, do you have kids?
I'm a Detroit native and I love my home state of Michigan. I love traveling and look forward to traveling abroad again preferably to Europe.
What is your day job if you have one?
I work in the social services field.
What are your hobbies? What do you do in your free time?
I love traveling and visiting museums so that I can discover new aspects of different cultures. I love history and talking to elders; they have a tremendous about of knowledge to share. Additionally, I love watching movies and Netflix.
Did you have a happy childhood?
Yes, I used my imagination to create stories for my Barbie dolls. I used to sit and create stories to share with my friends and cousins.
Is there a particular experience that made you start writing?
Do you have unpublished books? What are they about?
No, but I have an unpublished movie script that I wrote in the eighth grade.
What do you think should be improved in the education of our children? What do we lack?
Some things should be increased or returned to education such as phonics, poetry readings/reciting and writing compositions.
If you were allowed 3 wishes – what would they be?
What is your favorite music?
Smooth Jazz
