Exclusive Interview with
Maureen Scanlon
When did you start writing?
After starting my Life coaching business, I had taken headshots and showed them to my best friend who responded, "I see this on the cover of a book". With no aspirations to be a writer, I said, "ok, I'm writing a book". And thus, I began writing my first book, "My Dog is More Enlightened Than I Am".
What makes writing your passion?
I love being able to help others. To connect and write as if I'm having a conversation, engages my readers. The feedback is so fulfilling!
How long have you been writing?
I began writing in 2018.
What was the feeling when you published your first book?
A double-edged sword- like handing over your newborn baby and hoping everyone finds it as amazing as you do!
What’s the story behind your choice of characters?
Since I write non-fiction, the "characters" are my real life furry babies as well as my own experiences.
What annoys you the most in pursuing a writing career?
I wouldn't say it's annoying, but definitely a struggle that promotion and marketing are 90% of the success.
How do you get over the “writer’s block”?
I never have writer's block because I determined from the beginning to only write when I feel at peace about it. If I wasn't feeling it, I didn't write. I would come back when I had the most joy in doing it.
We all know the writer’s path is never easy, what makes you keep going? What advice would you give to new authors?
Just DO it! There is a reader for every story and it's a great expression of yourself, like art to the artist, writing is to the writer.
If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would you say?
Great Question! I would say, "Don't waste time on anything that doesn't serve you, not a job, a person, or a situation needs attention or energy if it doesn't feel good."
Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with the bad ones?
Absolutely! I've only had 1 bad review and yes, at first it stings, but after evaluating, I realized it was more about the person than my book. I focus on the good and ignore the bad.
What is the feeling when you get a good review?
Accomplishment.... I always hope that my work resonates and helps at least one person.
Have you ever incorporated something that happened to you in real life into your novels?
My books include all of my experiences, it helps others to know that I've been there and understand.
Which of your characters you can compare yourself with? Did you base that character on you?
What do you think, the book cover is as important as the story?
Yes! I think a book cover is like a first impression. It draws you in to want to see and know more.
Do you connect with your readers? Do you mind having a chat with them or you prefer to express yourself through your writing?
I love my readers! I love chatting in any form because I have gratitude for each and every one.
How do you feel when people appreciate your work or recognize you in public?
Fulfilled and Joyful, knowing I am living my purpose.
Who is your favorite author? Why?
I really like John Marrs and Colleen Hoover. I write non-fiction genre so I really respect those who write fiction and psychological thrillers, it takes so much imagination.
What’s the dream? Whom would you like to be as big as?
I really just want to continue my path knowing "build it and they will come". I want the world to here my message and take growth and happiness from it.
Would you rewrite any of your books? Why?
NO WAY :)
If you could switch places with any author – who would that be?
I would love the exposure and platform that the most successful authors have. The celebrity authors have an "automatic" interest and audience so a book can be amazing, but needs to get in front of people.
What would you say to the “trolls” on the internet? We all know them – people who like to write awful reviews to books they’ve never read or didn’t like that much, just to annoy the author.
I wouldn't say anything... I accept that there will always be those who feel life is a competition.
What would you say to your readers?
I appreciate each of you! Thank You for your feedback, reviews, and sharing.
Share a bit about yourself – where do you live, are you married, do you have kids?
I live in Mesa, Az, I am married to the most amazing man, Dennis. I have 3 adult children, 1 stepson, and 3 beautiful grandchildren.
What is your day job if you have one?
I am a Certified Life Coach and Relationship Expert.
What are your hobbies? What do you do in your free time?
Read of course! :) In addition, I'm very crafty so projects vary from scrapbooking and painting to currently building a miniature house.
Did you have a happy childhood?
I'd say I had a typical childhood. I think each generation has it's challenges and I know that my parents did their best.
Is there a particular experience that made you start writing?
It was an ah-ha moment one day while taking a break from my computer. I was trying to relax and I began watching my dogs. They inspired me to use them as the premise for my writing- to be spontaneous, unconditional, and follow their simple ways of enjoying life.
Do you have unpublished books? What are they about?
What do you think should be improved in the education of our children? What do we lack?
Mindfulness classes! Teaching children how to Meditate and learn how to process emotions in a healthy way could change the future of this planet. I do this with my grandchildren and see the positive outcomes.
If you were allowed 3 wishes – what would they be?
Health- For myself and my family
Wealth- To allow the freedom to enjoy life to fullest and travel the world
Happiness- For everyone.. for each and every person to see their greatness and live in a state of joy.
What is your favorite music?
I love all music. I think music resonates with our mood in the moment and is fluid.
