Jimmy Bailey's father started grooming him to be a professional baseball player when he was so young that he could hardly hold a ball. Jimmy finally made his way to minor league ball but then lost his way after having been convicted of a crime he didn't commit. He served his time and was counting the days as his incarceration was winding down. While in prison, he helped his Black cellmate, who'd never learned to read well in school, pass his high school equivalency exam.

Enter his sophisticated sister, who's in the process of earning her doctorate in urban education. She picks Jimmy up from prison on his release day. One of the guards attempts to make a lewd attempt on her, and she rebuffs him, embarrassing him in front of his fellow guards. This leads to intrigue, stalking, kidnapping, and even attempted murder.
