Cloninger, DBA, Professor Emeritus of Economics and Finance at the University of Houston-Clear Lake, has been recognized by Marquis Who’s Who Top Executives for dedication, achievements, and leadership in financial analysis and higher education.Celebrating more than five decades of expertise, Dr. Cloninger is a professor emeritus of economics and finance at the University of Houston-Clear Lake and a scholar known for his work on the economics of crime and law enforcement. He graduated from the Georgia Institute of Technology in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science in industrial management and continued his studies at Emory University, earning a Master of Business Administration in 1965. After a brief period working as a field engineer for General Telephone of Florida, Dr. Cloninger began teaching at the University of South Florida in 1965, rising from instructor to assistant professor of economics between 1968 and 1974. He completed a Doctor of Business Administration at Florida State University in 1973, paving the way for what would become a 30-year career with the University of Houston-Clear Lake, where he accepted an associate professor position in 1974.In 1980, Dr. Cloninger rose to full professor, a role he would hold until accepting emeritus status in 2006. During his time with the University of Houston-Clear Lake, he held a number of administrative positions, becoming Director of Programs in accounting and finance between 1982 and 1985, Associate Dean of the School of Business between 1985 and 1987, Interim Dean of the School of Business between 1997-1998 and Senate President from 2004 to 2005. Throughout his career, he has consulted extensively for law firms, legislative bodies, and private corporations and provided expert testimony in dozens of civil suits and evaluations. He continues to write for professional journals and op-ed columns, and is the author of “The Ninth Passage,” in 2019,” “The Economics of Crime and Law Enforcement,” in 1975, “Death on Demand,” in 1984, and more than 40 academic papers and journal articles. His work and skills as a referee have appeared in publications including Journal of Applied Economics, the Journal of Economic Behavior and Organization, and the Journal of Economic Education, and he was awarded Best Paper by the Journal of Risk and Insurance in 1981. In recognition of his contributions to his specialty, Dr. Cloninger is a fellow of American Southern Engineering Education, Emory University, and NASA, and a member of the American Financial Association, American Economic Association, Financial Management Association, Southern Financial Association, Southern Economic Association, and Beta Gamma Sigma.
