Exclusive Interview with
Sam Anthony
When did you start writing?
October 31st 2018, sometime in the afternoon, at the ripe old age of 53.
What makes writing your passion?
Writing is so much fun. I can invent characters, throw them into unexpected situations, and see how they respond. They usually manage to surprise me.
How long have you been writing?
About 18 months.
What was the feeling when you published your first book?
Wow! How did that happen?
What’s the story behind your choice of characters?
I started with a man who made a BIG mistake. He sent a text message to his wife instead of his lover. The rest of the characters grew from that premise.
What annoys you the most in pursuing a writing career?
Marketing.
How do you get over the “writer’s block”?
I try to write 1000 words per day.
If I can't manage 1000, I'll write 100.
If I can't manage 100, I'll write a sentence.
We all know the writer’s path is never easy, what makes you keep going? What advice would you give to new authors?
Write anything. One word at a time. Once it's written you can edit it and make it better.
If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would you say?
Keep your head down!
Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with the bad ones?
Yes. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. Strangely, I've never had a bad review that didn't contain at least one spelling mistake.
What is the feeling when you get a good review?
Overwhelming gratitude.
Have you ever incorporated something that happened to you in real life into your novels?
All my books so far are about adultery!!! Not that.
However, there are scenes in The Adulterer's Confession which are based on events that happened to (or near) me in my youth.
Which of your characters you can compare yourself with? Did you base that character on you?
All of my characters contain aspects of me. Some good, some bad. I hope I'm not like my main character: Lee.
What do you think, the book cover is as important as the story?
I always judge a book by its cover.
Do you connect with your readers? Do you mind having a chat with them or you prefer to express yourself through your writing?
I love communicating with my readers on twitter (@Foodcook314) or Facebook (https://www.facebook.com/sam.anthony.5437923)
How do you feel when people appreciate your work or recognize you in public?
Awesome!
Who is your favorite author? Why?
Jane Austen. She was so witty.
What’s the dream? Whom would you like to be as big as?
Honestly, I'd like Sam Anthony to be as big as J.K. Rowling, but I'd like me to remain anonymous.
Would you rewrite any of your books? Why?
No. There's always something new to write.
If you could switch places with any author – who would that be?
Any young female author.
What would you say to the “trolls” on the internet? We all know them – people who like to write awful reviews to books they’ve never read or didn’t like that much, just to annoy the author.
Get a life!
What would you say to your readers?
Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you.
