Exclusive Interview with
Glenn Goodwin
When did you start writing?
I started writing in 2007 but stopped off and on for many years for many reasons and things to overcome. I started this book then and took me this long to get it off the ground.
What makes writing your passion?
It's a way to get out of my own head. It's a way to get through the hurdles and just be creative while at the same time teaching hidden lessons.
How long have you been writing?
Off and on since 2007.
What was the feeling when you published your first book?
It was awesome. No one ever thought I could do something like this but I have been proving people wrong my entire life. I believe in myself but realize I can always be better. This was a huge step in that.
What’s the story behind your choice of characters?
Well, I have had a challenging life and have known many others that have had other struggles. SO I wanted to create a book that got inside people's heads to see more than black and white. My characters have all kinds of grey LOL. It's all about contradictions.
What annoys you the most in pursuing a writing career?
My own learning disability of being dyslexic and having ADHD.
How do you get over the “writer’s block”?
I work out and listen to music and hit the heavy bag.
We all know the writer’s path is never easy, what makes you keep going? What advice would you give to new authors?
I have always been one to go against the grain of what people say. I am motivated by those that think I can not do something, then I prove them wrong. Be hard, grind, and do not care what negatives come your way because you are accomplishing more than most and they are just saying you can't do it because they cant. Go forward
If you could go back in time and talk to your younger self, what would you say?
You are in for a heck of a roller coaster ride, so be prepared. It is not going to be easy at times. Fight on!
Do you read your book reviews? How do you deal with the bad ones?
Yes, I learn from them and look at things from their perspective to gain understanding.
What is the feeling when you get a good review?
Awesome, rewarding, accomplished!
Have you ever incorporated something that happened to you in real life into your novels?
Yes, my cancer as a kid and boxing.
Which of your characters you can compare yourself with? Did you base that character on you?
I did base Gunner a bit after myself, personality, and medical challenges. I did put some bits and pieces in others, but only here and there.
What do you think, the book cover is as important as the story?
Yes, because it gives people imagery for what is to come.
Do you connect with your readers? Do you mind having a chat with them or you prefer to express yourself through your writing?
I do connect and I try to talk with them as it presents itself at that time.
How do you feel when people appreciate your work or recognize you in public?
I feel surprised but rewarded.
Who is your favorite author? Why?
Edger Allen Poe, because of his dark side.
What’s the dream? Whom would you like to be as big as?
I want to be able to call my own shots. Tom Brady!
Would you rewrite any of your books? Why?
NO, I would not! My work and story is what it is and years of work!
If you could switch places with any author – who would that be?
Stephen King
What would you say to the “trolls” on the internet? We all know them – people who like to write awful reviews to books they’ve never read or didn’t like that much, just to annoy the author.
Do your thing but I will always do mine.
What would you say to your readers?
Read on because you are going to be surprised what happens next.
Share a bit about yourself – where do you live, are you married, do you have kids?
Maryland, divorced, and no kids!
What is your day job if you have one?
Education
What are your hobbies? What do you do in your free time?
Working out and spending time with pets but most of all my mom!
Did you have a happy childhood?
For the most part but we all have hurdles.
Is there a particular experience that made you start writing?
My divorce.
Do you have unpublished books? What are they about?
Yes, and it's a kid's book teaching life lessons. It's based on my one-eyed cat.
What do you think should be improved in the education of our children? What do we lack?
Spelling and grammar.
If you were allowed 3 wishes – what would they be?
To be able to do more for my mom.
To have more financial freedom to help kids, animals, church, and make my own life easier.
To travel the world more.
What is your favorite music?
I love anything that makes me think and feel but more rock.
Share a secret with us 🙂
