Maggie and David seem like the perfect couple, and Maggie anticipates a marriage proposal in the near future. But their relationship explodes, when David forces her to choose between him and her dream of becoming a thoroughbred jockey. Uncertain how long she'll be away, or if she'll ever return, Maggie leaves David and her home in New Jersey, and travels to California, where her childhood friend, Johnny Baker, owns a ranch.

With Johnny's help, she finds a job with a thoroughbred trainer and starts racing horses. Then David shows up. Chaos follows, and Maggie finds herself torn between the past and the present. When an innocent kiss turns into a night of passion with Johnny, Maggie is terrified that romance will destroy a lifelong friendship between them, and she pushes him away. But the cowboy doesn't push easily, and sparks fly as the couple tries to find their happily ever after.
