K9 Mine by Shannon MacLeod is an imaginative paranormal romance that combines Celtic mythology, law enforcement, K9 work, time travel, and action within an engaging modern Southern setting. The unusual premise quickly distinguishes the novel: Travis McLean, a dedicated police officer hoping to become a K9 handler, shelters Saoirse, an escaped fae shapeshifter pursued by a powerful and ruthless druid.
Travis and Saoirse form the emotional heart of the story. His protective instincts are balanced by her growing independence, courage, and determination to understand a world entirely unlike the one she escaped. Their romance develops through trust, humour, shared danger, and a genuine respect for personal freedom. Saoirse’s transformation into Search, an exceptionally capable Belgian Malinois, also gives the K9 sequences an entertaining supernatural twist.
MacLeod incorporates substantial detail about police work, military experience, working-dog training, Celtic folklore, and Southern culture. The supporting characters, particularly Mike, contribute warmth and lively banter, while Ansgar provides a suitably threatening antagonist whose motivations gradually become more complex.
The novel’s principal weakness is its considerable length, as extended domestic scenes, playful exchanges, and procedural explanations occasionally delay the central conflict and reduce the urgency of the middle section.
