Description

The Bold, the Brave, and the Wrinkled: Retirement Just Got Rowdy!

Barry and Beth, high school sweethearts separated by time and circumstance, find themselves reunited at the Blue Loon Village senior living center in Minneapolis. Now both seventy, they rekindle their relationship only to discover how differently time has shaped them. Beth has blossomed into a free spirit with a goth flair, while Barry has transformed into the curmudgeon he swore in his youth he’d never become.

Despite their differences, neither senior is content to settle into a quiet life at the Blue Loon Village. As they reminisce about their unfulfilled teenage dream of changing the world, Beth convinces Barry that it’s never too late to make a difference. In fact, their age provides them with an advantage—the minimal consequences they’d face if caught doing something illegal. Inspired by their past and emboldened by their age, they set off on a daring road trip across America as Silver Squad vigilantes with nothing to lose.

Soon joined by Jenny—a woman in her forties on the run from her abusive cop-husband—the Silver Squad’s humorous, sometimes perilous escapades include robbing the prosperous to feed the homeless, rescuing drowning kittens, challenging unethical alligator hunters, and confronting a mass shooter with only a can of SPAM.

And sometimes, when a woman tires of running, she turns around and fights. As Jenny’s fear turns into courage, she vows to seize control—and give her husband the surprise of a lifetime.

The Silver Squad: Rebels With Wrinkles is a comedic novel that celebrates living life to the fullest while tackling the serious issues of spousal abuse, animal cruelty, mass shootings, and homelessness.

EDITORIAL REVIEW

Marty Essen’s The Silver Squad: Rebels with Wrinkles is a refreshing and unconventional take on later-life adventure, blending humor, vigilante justice, and a second-chance romance. At its core, the novel explores themes of aging, independence, and the desire to remain relevant in a world that often sidelines the elderly. Through Barry and Beth—former high school sweethearts who reunite decades later—Essen crafts a pair of unlikely heroes whose adventures are both thrilling and thought-provoking. Their banter is sharp, their chemistry engaging, and their antics unpredictable, making for an entertaining read.

One of the book’s strengths lies in its witty dialogue and dynamic storytelling, seamlessly combining humor and action. However, the transitions between comedic moments and heavier themes, such as domestic abuse and revenge, could be smoother to maintain emotional balance. At times, the pacing slows, particularly in the middle sections where the characters plan their escapades in great detail—tightening these parts would help maintain momentum. The concept of the "Silver Squad" is compelling, but expanding the supporting cast earlier in the novel could add further depth, creating a stronger ensemble. Additionally, more nuance in the antagonists' motivations would enrich the conflict, making the story even more layered and engaging.

Overall, The Silver Squad is a wildly entertaining and original novel that offers both humor and insight. With slight refinements in pacing, tonal balance, and character depth, it has the potential to leave an even greater impact on readers who enjoy witty, action-packed adventures with heart.

Entertaining but a Bit Over-the-Top

I enjoyed this book a lot, but some moments felt a little too exaggerated, making it hard to suspend disbelief. That said, the humor and dialogue are fantastic, and I loved seeing older protagonists take charge in a way that’s usually reserved for younger characters. Overall, a fun and lighthearted read with an adventurous spirit!

Laugh-Out-Loud Funny with a Side of Justice

Marty Essen nails it with this one! The humor is sharp, the action is unexpected, and the characters feel so real. The banter between Barry and Beth is absolutely priceless. I also appreciated the deeper themes about love, loss, and finding purpose later in life. A must-read for anyone who loves crime stories with a comedic twist!

Unique and Quirky, But a Bit Slow in the Middle

This book is unlike anything I’ve read before—imagine The Golden Girls meets Ocean’s Eleven! The premise is fantastic, and I loved how Barry and Beth’s relationship evolved alongside their vigilante escapades. The only downside was that some parts of the story dragged, especially when they were just planning their moves rather than taking action. Still, a really fun and original read!

A Hilarious, Heartfelt Adventure!

I couldn’t put this book down! The Silver Squad: Rebels with Wrinkles is equal parts funny, thrilling, and heartwarming. Barry and Beth are characters you can’t help but root for, and their antics had me laughing out loud. I loved how the book tackles aging in a fresh, rebellious way. Who says seniors can’t be action heroes? Highly recommended!

BooksShelf's Editorial Review:

Marty Essen's The Silver Squad: Rebels with Wrinkles is an exuberant and unconventional novel that celebrates the vitality and resilience of its older protagonists while tackling issues of justice and humanity. Through its intriguing premise and heartwarming character dynamics, the book defies stereotypes about aging and offers a spirited adventure that is both humorous and poignant.

Premise and Plot Development The narrative follows Barry and Beth, two high school sweethearts reunited in their seventies, as they embark on an unexpected mission to become vigilantes. What begins as an exploration of their unfulfilled dreams and mundane routines morphs into a quest to enact change, one small yet impactful act at a time. The plot is refreshingly original, blending elements of romance, action, and moral dilemmas. The pacing is brisk, with each chapter contributing a sense of progression, whether through character development or the increasingly daring escapades of the titular "Silver Squad."

Characterization Essen crafts memorable, multi-dimensional protagonists. Barry is initially portrayed as a curmudgeonly retiree reluctant to embrace his new environment, while Beth brings a spark of rebelliousness and wit. Together, they form a dynamic duo whose chemistry drives the story. The supporting cast, though secondary, enriches the narrative by providing glimpses into the broader community of Blue Loon Village. This interplay of characters adds emotional depth, highlighting themes of companionship, loss, and the enduring need for purpose.

Themes and Messages At its core, The Silver Squad is a story about finding meaning in life's later stages. It challenges the conventional notion of slowing down with age, replacing it with a narrative of empowerment and daring. Additionally, the book tackles issues like domestic abuse and societal neglect with sensitivity, offering a satisfying balance between levity and gravity.

Writing Style Essen’s prose is accessible and engaging, marked by witty dialogue and vivid descriptions. His comedic timing adds levity to intense moments, making the story entertaining without undercutting its more serious undertones. The transitions between humorous banter and reflective passages are seamless, ensuring that the narrative retains a cohesive tone.

Strengths

The innovative concept of senior vigilantes is executed with charm and creativity.
Strong character development makes readers deeply invested in Barry and Beth’s journey.
The book effectively combines humor and social commentary.
Weaknesses

Some secondary characters and subplots could have been explored further for added nuance.
A few of the vigilante scenarios strain believability, though they align with the novel’s whimsical tone.
Conclusion The Silver Squad: Rebels with Wrinkles is an inspiring and delightful read that reminds us it’s never too late to make a difference—or to find love and adventure. It’s a perfect pick for readers looking for a mix of humor, action, and heartfelt moments, with a cast of characters who prove that age is just a number.
