"Lindsey Bardwell!" My momma yelled. "Your gonna be late for school."
I woke up startled by the sound of her voice. Remembering it was Monday and I had to go back to
school. I looked over to my right and noticed that my boyfriend Luke was in my bed. Visons of what
happened last night popped up into my head and I smiled. Quickly that went away as I remembered what
would happen if my momma caught us together.
"Luke you were supposed to leave last night" I quietly told him as I slapped his arm to wake him
"You said I could stay." he mumbled.
"I said no such thing." I hissed.
"Lindsey do I gotta come up there to wake you up?" my momma asked.
"Uh no momma, I'm up. I'm getting dressed right now" I shouted out to her.
I looked at Luke who was still on my bed.
"You need to get dressed and get out of here without being seen." I quietly told him once more.
"Alright darling, you know I'd do anything for you." he replied.
He got up out of bet and scrambled to get his clothes on. I quickly got my pants on, but he stopped
me before I could put my shirt on. He then proceeded to kiss me, and the fool that I was, let him. Right in
the middle of it wouldn't you know my mother walked in on us. We quickly stopped what we were doing,
and I stepped away from Luke.
"Momma I," I started to say but she interrupted me.
"Uh-uh. No. Get dressed and then we will talk." She left and quietly shut the door behind her.
I quickly finished getting dressed and went downstairs to meet her. Luke followed behind me. I
knew what was coming, she was going to explode.
"Momma I," I started to say again but she interrupted me once again.
"No, not yet." She looked at Luke, wanting him to leave.
"What I'm not in trouble with you?" he asked her.
"No that's for your momma to decide. I would like to talk to my daughter alone. The discussion I
want to have with her is for family."
Luke looked at me and back at my momma. I told him it would be alright to leave us. He left, but
knowing him, he would wait outside where he could hear the trouble I'm about to get in.
"You’re going to live with your uncle." She stated. It wasn't what I was expecting and certainly
wasn't what I wanted to hear.
"I already made the call to him. It’s all set up. The plane ticket is already purchased."
"What? No! I don’t even know him. You can't do this to me! Just because I-"
"I can too do this to you because you are not legally an adult yet and I'm your mother!" she yelled.
"No, it’s not fair, just because I had sex doesn't mean you can send me away. Especially on my
senior year. All my friends are here, my boyfriend is here!" I cried.
"Lindsey, everything in life is not meant to last."
"Oh what, like you and daddy. You know momma, if this some way of you tellin me you don't want
me to end up like yourself, its sick. Why would you send me to someone who you don’t even talk to
"We leave tomorrow." she told me, completely ignoring that fact.
"Tomorrow?" I asked in disbelief. Her mind was already made up. She had no room for argument
"Go get in the truck I'm taking you to school." She told me. She turned around and headed towards
her room and came back out with her purse.
I slammed the door on my way out and headed towards the car. Luke came up to me and hugged
me to calm me down.
"I take it you heard everything."
"Yep I heard it."
I rested my head on his shoulders, not believing what just took place.
"Let’s run away together." Luke whispered in my ear.
"I mean it. I'm eighteen, I have a job already. I can take care of you."
"I," I started to say. I thought about what he asked but it didn't take long for me to answer. "Ok let’s
do it. Tonight, after school."
"It’s a deal." He smiled at me.
"Lindsey are you coming or not?" My momma asked. I didn't even notice her walking past me to
"Coming Momma," I said aloud in agony.
I kissed Luke goodbye and then ran to the passenger’s side of the pick-up truck. It was the only
good thing that we got when my daddy left us.
My momma got in the driver’s side, buckled herself up, and started the truck. Besides the radio
playing, we sat in silence for most of the ride to school. When we got to a stoplight, however, she turned
the radio off.
“Lindsey…” She started to say, but I interrupted her before she said anything.
“I’m not in the mood to talk to you.” I told her.
“Then you can listen. I love you so much…”
“Let me stop you there. I hate you.” I said to spite her. I knew what she was going to tell me. The
story of her and daddy. She told it to me so many times it lost its meaning. Her and daddy met when they
were in high school, back in Michigan. They ran away when they found out mom was pregnant with me.
Daddy had a job lined up in Louisiana. It was a good job and kept us happy for a while. We had a better
house then the junk of one we have now, but once Daddy left it was gone. The only thing he left us was the
I looked at the stoplight which just turned green. “The light is green.”
She started moving. I looked up at her, but it was only for a second before a semi slammed into the
driver’s side and knocked us out.
I opened my eyes after it happened. I looked around me to see what happened. I some how
managed outside of the truck lying on the ground. Probably because I was stupid enough to not wear my
seatbelt. I guess that is what happens when you are angry at the person who is driving you.
I got up as quickly as I could and raced over to her. I didn’t mean what I said. I still loved her. I just
hoped she lived so I could tell her that. Luckily, I could hear the sirens coming towards us. I know Luke was
following us, so he was the one to call for help. Where was he?
“Momma!” I yelled at her. I got down on my knees to see her. She was still strapped in, hanging
upside down. Her forehead was bleeding out. I went check for her pulse when the Ambulance arrived. The
EMT’s quickly got out and raced over towards us.
“Thank God you’re here. My mother is still unconscious and stuck in the truck.” I told them, but as
they came towards me something weird happened. They passed right through me. The feeling was odd. I
was confused why it happened. When I looked around, that’s when I heard Luke’s voice.
“Over here!” Luke yelled. I looked at him and saw why the EMT passed through me. Luke was
knelt by my body where I got up from. I looked back at my mother who the EMT’s were now helping, and
when I saw that she was getting the help she needed I went to my body. Watching what was happening. I
probably didn’t see Luke because of all the action. Luke went to pick me up to help but the EMT stopped
“Don’t move her body yet.” The EMT instructed him. “Do you know her?”
“Yeah, she’s my girlfriend. Her name is Lindsey Bardwell.” Luke responded.
“What’s your name?” he asked.
“Hi Luke, my name is Cody. I take it you’re the one who called for us. While I check her injures can
you tell us what you saw.”
“The stoplight was green for us and they started to go,” Luke started to say. He paused because he
had to of been in shock. Cody started checking my body for injuries while Luke told him what he saw
happen. “Then the semi came out of nowhere, hitting the drivers side making it spin. I saw fly out of the
truck. She got in an argument with her mother earlier. She must have forgotten to put on her seat belt.”
“What’s her mother’s name?”
Thank you, Luke,” Cody told him. He put a brace around my neck. “Now you want to help me get
her on a stretcher?”
Luke helped Cody get my body on the stretcher and together they brought me to the ambulance.
When I was on there, a police officer came up and asked Luke what happened. As he told the police officer
everything he saw, I noticed my mom was now out of the truck and being put on a stretcher. When I saw
she would be going to the hospital I was relieved. She would make it. We were both going to make it and I
could tell her I loved her and that I didn’t hate her. I was just angry at her, she had to of known that.
