Description
My Mother Called Me Unni is an immigrant’s story, which means it’s an American story. Drawing upon his childhood in India and the teachings of his ancient heritage, the author of this inspirational memoir questions, understands, and ultimately assimilates into his new country, experiencing an exhilarating realization of the American Dream.
Born into a large, traditional Hindu Nair family in 1960s India, Venugopal K. Menon had to work hard to achieve his dreams. Even though his family was considered middle-class, he didn’t own shoes until he was an adolescent, and he studied by the light of a kerosene lamp. What he did always was with love and support from his adorable family, and with those, he become a doctor.
Menon’s decision to leave his homeland meant tearing at a centuries-old bond, but he found what he sought in the United States: professional success. He also found personal success, playing a significant role in establishing the Indian community in his new home—and setting the foundation for a new bond connecting generations to come.
Menon dwells on the specifics of his story, shedding light on what it was like to grow up in India when it was still a British colony. He also speaks to the greater immigrant story. In the process, My Mother Called Me Unni educates those whose family’s came to the States long ago and inspires fellow newcomers from around the world.
